Description

The Fairey Gannet was designed and built in England in 1949 as a carrier borne anti-submarine aircraft. In 1955 No.816 and 817 Squadrons of the Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm replaced their Firefly aircraft with Gannets. Some 40 Gannets were purchased by Australia and they served solidly, but unspectacularly, until 1967 when they were retired and replaced by Grumman Trackers. Most of the Gannets were destroyed as fire fighting dummies or as targets for live weapons training. This is what I have found out about the aircraft. I certainly am no expert, but as far as I'm told the info is correct. For those who don't know, Bill is a pilot. I hope like this old girl mate. Best viewed full size.

Whoa. Did not know this aircraft, so I checked Wiki - very different. And those are contra-rotating propellers. Fantastic.

First of all...like your photo very much and thanks for thinking of me on this. You've shown me just enough to know I've never seen one before!!! That sent me to search for Fairey Gannet (where did that name come from?) and among a few others, here is a great link for a full pic and more info. Click here Probably takes the cake for least handsome but made spectacularly good sense to meet the need in the 40s and 50s. Is that tin plate over the windows? If you had put this up with no name...I'd have been baffled.

Bill these old planes are very much sitting around under the sun gathering dust! By the look of them they have been there for a looong time too, so I guess the tin in the windows was to maybe protect it from the elements?

Or they were smashed early on perhaps and someone fixed it.
