Description

Dry Stone Walls This is another image from above Malham Cove. It gives a closer example of the limestone blocks called clints and fissures called grykes and of course the dry stone walls..so called as they contain no form of cement but due to the skills of the peopl who built them have stood the test of time and weather. And belive me this place gets some weather. For those familiar with the area of yorkshire they will know of the miles upon miles of dry stone walls across the county. For thiose who have not been there these walls set the landscape in an almost patch work fashion. Many have been there hundreds of years and when you think that they were built with just pure manual labour one has to wonder the man hours and pure physical effort that went into their construction. They spread from hill to dale and when seen as they disappear over hills sometimes over 1500 feet high I often wonder how they managed to do this back breaking task.

Rugged landscape, the stile gives scale to it all. Great shot.

Excellent capture, the distance these walls go is pretty staggering. Even more so when you realise that vast stretches of wall were made by men working alone. A pretty lonely job!

Having been brought up in a Moorland area this series has been superb and yet another great image of Yorkshire which remind me so much of my Native Cornwall.

I love these walls; I could spend hours and hours just walking them and photographing all of their windings. Great capture!
