I believe the Hawker Tempest was originally conceived as an air-superiority fighter to succeed the Hurricane; however, it proved its worth as a fighter-bomber, which along with the P-47 Thunderbolt, was particularly effective against German ground targets. Freight trains were possibly the most frequent targets to the point that locomotive crews refused to show up for work because the Tempest and Thunderbolt attacks made their jobs almost suicide missions.
