The Church of St. Mary and St. Finnan, Glenfinnan Scotland In the River Finnan valley at the head of Loch Sheil stands the beautiful gothic style Roman catholic church of St. Mary and St. Finnan.Built in 1872 and consecrated in 1873 the church was designed by E Welby Pugin The church is a memorial chapel to the MacDonald’s of Glenaladale, the family with whom Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed prior to the raising of the Jacobite standard at Glenfinnan in August 1745. The church contains memorial stones to the Prince and to members of the MacDonald family. Edward Welby Pugin is the son of Augustus Welby Pugin, designer of the House of Commons in London. The elevated position of the church offers the most stunning views of Loch Sheil and the surrounding landscape of spectacular mountains.
