Description

Here is the Iwo Jima Memorial taken at sunset. I wanted to get two different views of the memorial. I don't know if it's any good, but I just had to try. I'm not a photographer by any means. Any hints would be appreciated, so when we do go back to Washington DC I can take better pictures. Thanks.

A little dark, but lovely because of the content. I think maybe just a little postwork would improve this. I like the composition very much though. Bunny

Just like to say that of the two Clint Eastwood directed films depicting the story of Iwo Jima the American version of events was mediocre but the Japanese view point was superb and is well worth watching. As is well known this scene was posed for the cameras just like the Red Army putting their flag on the Reichstag. Unfortunately I agree with the views expressed above about this photograph. A statue at night is a hard subject to make interesting. (Rating it a 4 which isn't bad).

since it's a silhouette capture and you can only really make out the forms of the figures, I think I'd have gotten a little lower so that they're clearly defined against the skyline, and crop off the sides of the frame as they don't really add anything to the composition... nice subject and idea for a shot tho!

That's an awesome silhouette shot. If you have a graphics program, I'd just apply "sharpen" to it once or twice to pull the statue out from the sky a bit more, but otherwise it's great :).

Very nice, and an excellent subject. Roboman28 is, of course, badly mistaken. The original photo was not posed. It is one frame of many photos taken by Joe Rosenthal of the second flag raising. I would suggest a reading of James Bradley's book, Flags of Our Fathers, which tells as full a story of the flagraisers and the hell that was Iwo Jima as will ever be told.
