Description

A satelite dish a'la 2009 and a gravity feed gas pump circa the 1920s. Rural towns are officially recognized by the existance of a post office. This was the Beverly, Missouri Post office and General Store until the post office was closed in 1960 through consolidation in a larger rural town 6-7 miles away. Somebody still lives in the back of this old building as evidenced by the "Direct TV dish". The gas pump is truly a museum piece. It originally had a wooden handle on the left side to pump gas from an underground storage tank into the glass cylinder and then a hose and nozzle on the right side to allow gravity to drain off the gasoline into a car, truck or tractor. My, how times change. They just change more slowly here than in many other places. :-) Bill

I fear the porch roof is going to change in the very near future without attention. Nice pic - a country road scene for sure.

Great contrast of the ages. Well done. Noted the new vs old with the roof on the building being metal and the porch shingles.. Looks like solar lights next to the door. great study,

A piece of History AND a sign of the times, unfortunately! Much the same goes on here. The closing of Post Offices, with no thought to those who have no transport or the old and frail! (Grump. Moan!) It's a real shame that 'Money Rules'! Cool Postwork, my friend. Rob.

I saw a place like this somewhere not too long ago, think it was somewhere in oregon. my grandparents had one of those old gas pumps right at their house, we used to love to turn the handle, though it was locked and hadn't been used in years. i'm sure there was some hugely environmental issue with it later!! great shot, love your selective color!!

Sometimes I think the times need to change a little more slowly. I know which era i'd rather spend time in. Wonderful image Bill. and if it were not for the and truck (we called em Ford Cargo here) this could easily have been an old shot. Please post more of these.

A wonderful escape into the Twilight Zone with this nostalgic capture, Bill! Expect to see Bonnie and Clyde step out of the door at any moment. Gas was a dime a gallon back then, or at least not over a quarter. Stellar clarity and textures in this one

I like this a lot. It takes me back, to remember buildings like this when they were still in use. I can see the worn, wide-planked wooden floors, a different color in front of the door, and lower than the rest of the place. There was a soda machine in my town ... let's see ... I believe it opened from the top, like a chest freezer. I used to think old people were weird, remembering stuff like that ...

There is a great feeling to this. Sort of blending of old and new with the old winning out. The b/w is a perfect way to show this beauty off.

Great picture! I have a picture of one of these pumps. They are neat. They had a sign for the gas as 13 1/2 cents.

A great find and capture Bill. There is something to these old towns. One can find some of these old houses and gas stations along stretches of the old Route 66 in Arizona too.

I was hoping that you would say that the passing motorist could still use the old pump! Nice use of selective coloring.
