Description

This is a representation of only a part of the Battle of Midway, and at that it had to be compressed in time and space. The aircraft carriers had been attacked several times by planes from Midway, and finally torpedo bombers from the American carriers. No hits had been scored, but the fleet became widely dispersed and the covering fighters had been drawn down to sea level. As the attack wave that might have altered history was about to take off, SBD dive bombers took aim at three of the carriers in turn. Akagi was the second to be hit, and the best evidence suggests that this single bomb did most of the damage. The first was a near-miss off the port side, even with the first elevator. The second hit just aft of the second elevator, and penetrated to the hangars where bombs were detonated and gasoline fires were started. The third bomb went through the left rear corner of the flightdeck, exploding in the water. It caused damage that soon jammed the rudder, complicating the fire fighting and adding to the general confusion of the situation. Imported from Poser 6 and rendered in Vue 6. The Japanese destroyer is by Siosai.
