Description

Different type of barn today. This is a barn designed specifically for drying tobacco leaves. The inside shot shows how easy it is for air to circulate throughout the barn. Once tobacco is harvested it sits in the field for three days, then dried in a barn for six weeks, then shipped to the tobacco warehouse. Platte County, Missouri is just east across the Missouri River from where I live. Platte County farmers have been growing tobacco since the 1830s. Thanks for stopping by and all your support. Bill P.S. Today this barn sits in a 1,300 acre park for hiking, picnicing and outdoor recreation. The barn will soon be open to the public. It has just undergone a rebuild aimed at preserving it for years to come...note the concrete floor, concrete pilings under the vertical posts and evidence of new wood work. It also sports a new roof.

I'd never seen a tobacco barn before. This is quite interesting! I'm glad they're restoring it as a part of our history. I like both images very much, and your presentation is great!

It's really good to see that they are preserving these old barns for the future but I have to wonder, when doing so, why not put the concrete under the ground as far as you can and 'age down' the wood? Its done here. Love your 'Barn Pictures' though. There are so many different kinds! Bring 'em on, my friend. Rob.

Excellent images. Glad to see its preservation. I looked in one filled up with tobacco, and to me it seemed very dark in there. This really shows the air circulation.

Over here in the UK with so many people converting barns into houses it's great to see some of these true pieces of history still standing. We can only imagine the aroma when standing inside this. Fine work Bill :)

Stellar POV, DOF, clarity, colors and textures as always, Bill! Perspective, too. Lots of nostalgia on display, but the stuff will kill you.

Now that's a BARN. No piddling little cow parlour, thats huge !. The only obvious difference is in the translation, when you say "easy for air to circulate" we would say "full of holes"...:) Very interesting subject, from the outside it looks solid, however from the inside...well...as you say, circulation. Very interesting and informative. Thanks Bill...now where did I put my pipe?.
