Etta Grigsby Partee, 1884 -1911 Inscription: Warm summer sun shine brightly here Warm southern wind blow gently here Green sod above lie light lie light Good night dear heart, good night, good night. Seated is a portrait of Etta Grigsby Partee holding a garland that drapes across the left side of the memorial. Her right bare foot and shoulder are exposed from under a flowing gown. The memorial was encased in the 1940s with a glass dome that was broken and never replaced. Sculpture: Italian marble; Base: granite. Sculpture: 65 x 41 1/2 x 72 in. Base: 89 c 63 x 8 in. Location: Memphis, TN - Elmwood Cemetery This is the most beautiful monument/sculpture I've ever come across in a cemetery (and I've been to a few). The above is all I am able to find out so far. I want to delve deeper but that means a trip to where obits and such records from that time period are kept. In due time. I think the lovely Ms. Etta Grigsby Partee must not be allowed to fade into obscurity. She had, or at least married into a family of substantial means, most likely with some connection to cotton. From the inscription it's easy to deduce she was much loved. Someone went to great length/effort and expense on this touching memorial. If you sit long enough, look and listen to your own heart these tombs/monuments have much to say. It's not a fascination with death that propels me to cemeteries. On the contrary, it's my infatuation with life that take me there. So while we can...we need to live!
Thanks for stopping by!
