Hi, I am Sig (junge1),
I was born in Dominikus- Krankenhaus in Berlin-Hermsdorf, Bezirk Reinickendorf in December 1939. Bezirk Reinickendorf was one of 20 Bezirke that made up Gross-Berlin before World War II and one of 12 Bezirke that made up former West-Berlin, the other 8 Bezirke were Russian occupied and became East-Berlin after the war. Moved from Berlin to Neurohlau (Nova Role) Sudetenland (now Czech Republic), in August 1943 (our entire block of apartment buildings was bombed out in November 1943) and returned back to Berlin in November 1945. Saw my dad the first time in my life in August/September 1946 after he returned from POW camp. Attended elementary school in Berlin-Waidmannslust, high school in Berlin-Hermsdorf, and trade school in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Was an apprentice for the trade of Klischeeaetzer (photo engraver) at Burrath & Schmidt on Friedrichstrasse between U-Bahnhof Kochstrasse (near to what later became Checkpoint Charlie) and Hallisches Tor.
While watching Allied planes supplying West-Berlin by air during the Berliner Luftbruecke in 1948-49 I developed my love for aircraft. I guess I could be considered a 'Berliner Grosschnauze", or at least I used to be.
'Wanderlust' led me to leave Berlin in summer 1960 to emigrate to Toronto, Canada and in February 1962 to move from Canada to New York City, NY, USA. In January 1963 I joined the United States Air Force, one step ahead of Uncle Sam drafting me. Became a United States citizen within 7 weeks after it became a security issue because of my military career. One day after I was sworn in as a citizen in Seattle, my entire unit left for Southeast Asia in June 1966. After nearly 5 years of active duty (extended 11 months to make it an 18 months overseas deployment) I got discharged and moved to New York City. In 1973 I moved to Phoenix, Arizona and two years later joined the Arizona Air National Guard.
Received my higher education at Arizona State University and the University of Georgia and worked for 22 years for the Arizona Department of Water Resources in various capacities. Upon military retirement in 1999 and State retirement in 2005 I looked at a number of things to keep me occupied. Traveling and joining 'renderosity' in September 2007 were a couple of them,
Sig..

This was my second time on a cruise ship. Two years ago I went on a 12-day Western Mediterranean cruise out of Rome. I had ambivalent feelings after it was over. I had missed a connection on the way over from the US and as a consequence missed Rome and the excursion in Naples. I had insurance and had no trouble getting reimbursed, but nevertheless didn't get to see Pompeii and the crater of Vesuvius. The trip was not cheap, but to see the places I saw on this trip separately would have cost much more. There are many options available as to what cruise line, where to go, and how much to spend. To complete a boarding pass, once a cruise is booked, a credit card number is provided by the passenger for on-board charges. To make things easier. But this is also an easy way to run up charges. All alcoholic beverages are charged, on-board purchases in any number of stores, casino gambling, internet or phone calls ($5/min)can easily run up a big bill, to falling into traps as having ones picture taken when boarding or leaving the ship in the various ports. The picture taking itself is not charged, but the marketing gimmick is sold as souvenirs etc. I usually had a bottle of beer with my meal, whether ordered by the steward or bought at the bar it cost between @5.47 to near $6 per bottle (19% gratuity included), depending on the brand. It is charged to the account. The cheapest bottle of Merlot (to allow me a glass of wine in the evening in my cabin was $30, exactly the same brand I bought at Walmart for $1.97.All these additional cost can be researched on line, each cruise has a sligthly different policy. Next time I am trying to bring my own bottle on board at the intitial boarding. Any alcohol bought during the cruise has to be surrendered upon boarding the ship and will be made available at the end of the cruise. Entertainment ranges from the gimmicks to keep kids occupied to other mindless or intersting games. But there are daily broadway-type shows twice each evening, any number of bands or piano type music that is relaxing and encourages dancing. Or one can find a quiet corner or place in the sun, or shade, and read a book. Many people did that. Or one can go to one of the lower decks and watch the ocean and look for Flying Fish (on this cruise) or Dolphins, Whales on a North Atlantic crossing, or see icebergs, off the coast of New Foundland. There are many reasonable cruises out of San Diego or Los Angeles down along the Mexican Coast, cruises from Seattle and Vancouver, Canada to Alaska along the coast, cruises out of New Jersey, Houston, Cape Canaveral, or any number of other ports. What is starting to sink in with me is the luxury made available to the average passenger. The decor and services provided equals what I equated to the Titanic era when the Astors, Rockefellers, Vanderbuilts and so on crossed the Atlantic. On this second cruise I was a 'repeat costumer' and as such there was a get together by invitation for free drinks, courtesy of the captain.

Lovely photo again, my friend! When on the Ocean Village (and Emerald), Deb and I also ran along cruise ships for a way! Fun... As for your comment on prices! Compared to UK registered ships that is expensive! I have to say mate! Unless things have gone VASTLY since I cruised last of course... Gambling (yep, your choice!), drinks. yep, but nowhere near that expensive!) Boats ashore - free! etc... Try British lines next mate. There were loads of Americans already doing it! Another brilliant picture! Rob.
