A lot of fun, indeed!
Yesterday, Saturday 21th, there were so many people (around 100,000 people when the Venetian denizen are only 56,000) trying to reach Venice ("Venice or bust!!") that the Italian Railroads system blew up and crowds couldn't reach the town ("busted by FS" - FS = State Railways)!!!
In the most crowded streets (calli) the police forced people in a one way direction only!
No forecast for today's hordes!

Sights and sounds yes but food smell no. It's strange but in Venice there are a lot of odors (some unpleasant like rotten wood, mold, "bio-fluids") all mixed with the ubiquitous scent of the dirty water of the canals, but the smell of food flutters only closer to some restaurants 'cause of fried fish. McDonald's too is almost "aseptic" according to the ordinary McDonald's standard!!!

your little camera clicky finger certainly has had a good work out ;) these are magnificent--all unique but beautiful in their own way...do folks rent these costumes or make them themselves...i would imagine some of them are the product of art students...what venice should do is have some sort of surcharge to access the city during carneval--proceeds to be used in the work to keep venice from sinking...anyways, thanks again for sharing ;)

lush, exotic & splendid photographs, capturing a teeming world of myth & carnival & folklore; and while all the masks have serious expressions, the effect is one of a giddy, wild cornucopia of mythic glee.
