My name is Derrick Shawn Grant. After several years in medical science, I have finally found my true calling as an artist. My current medium of expression uses self-taught computer graphics to create images that are true to life or surrealistic using Bryce, Poser, and PhotoShop. I have studied drawing and art history in college as electives and have painted on large canvas using oil and acrylics.

BIO
My name is Derrick Shawn Grant. I am now a graphics artist and starting my business, DK Designs. My Background is in Medical science and I an a classically trained Human Anatomist. My education occured in Montreal Canada where I attended, Vanier College, and McGill University. There I completed my BSc., MSc and Ph.D in Cell Biology and Human Anatomy. During this time I took several minor courses in Art History, Painting and Drawing. This educational background was followed by postdoctoral work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. I then moved on to Thomas Jefferson University, in Philadelphia, as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Throughout these work experiences I taught myself to use Bryce, Poser, Painter, PhotoShop and other Graphic program. I encorporated both these fields of Science and Art to produce graphical designs for scientific presentation over the past 10 years. Finally I decided to leave Science to concentrate my efforts on graphic arts and design. I am committed to this form of contemporary art, and even though several pieces of my work illustrate classical themes and techniques, the final impression one gets, is completely different using this digital venue. Each image can take from one day to a week depending on if the feeling that I would like to convey. My motivation comes from things around me. I am sometimes inspired by dreams, books that I read, the movies, my family or my emotions at that moment. I hope that you will share my joy in my newly discovered art form.

What a lovely, sensitive image. I'm particularly taken by the beauty of the fruit. It just has a magical, ethereal organic look to it. Normally, I would be suspicious the single gold ball, but it actually does a good job of anchoring the very subtle gold/brown in the fruit leaves, and brings out the gold rim on the pot in the back. This one deviation from your color pallet works, and I suspect helps strengthen our sense of warmth in the skin tones. Your sense of composition is very classic: cluttered in the back and very clean up close. Even though those appear to be two male hands enjoying this intimate moment, the scene remains very tender. If I had to suggest any improvements, they would be very minor. I do find the camera lens distortion of the coffee cup a bit distracting, and I think it’s making the closest forearm look fatter than it should. I’m also put off by that odd element behind the flowers to our left. It’s the only angular, straight-edged object on the table, and as such, it distracts me from the soft, roundness of all the pots, vases, bottles, and tea service elements. Even your spoon is mostly a rounded element, which combine to make that one object seem out of place. I also wonder if you could add a little tea to that cup in the foreground? It is called “Tea for Two in Blue,” and I see the blue and two, but not the tea. :-) All in all, though, congratulations on one of the best images I’ve seen here in a long time. It’s moving, emotional, and your amazing use of textures conveys a sense of tenderness and romance that is timeless and classic.

Very tender and beautiful! I love the colors and the composition is very effective. Makes a wonderful change in a gallery dominated by epic landscapes to see this intimate setting. Well done!
