Description

The FTL ship Athena, moments after the fateful accident which flung her thousands of light years across the galaxy in a blink of an eye. Residual energies and plasma can be seen arcing along the length of the ship. The super-heated engines just beginning to cool. On her maiden flight to test the new FTL Parker drives, there was an an accident within the fusion reactor switching units and 90% of the entire power reserves were dumped directly to the drives. The immense surge of energy created a gravi-metric pulse which literally tore a hole into space, and the Athena simply vanished within. The ship was designed on Earth and built on Mars. It is a continuous curve design (think stealth bomber). Scientists of the era (2133), found that gravi-metric pulse fields could not form properly around any object where sharp edges or obstructions lay within the range of the field generators. A form of static charge built up in these areas causing the field to fail. The ship was constructed by fusing metals into a plasma then using magnetic fields to shape the metals around the titanium alloy shell and engines. Only after hull completion was a hatch cut into the base of the ship. Actually I could write a whole chapter or two on the ship .. not enough time or space to do it here. Athena - modeled in Hexagon and rendered in Carrara 7, comp and post in PS/CS2. Thanks for taking a look .. please let me know what you think. Take at look at my previous posts for more details. Thanks to those following the story line and for your comments on previous works. Have a great week. EDIT: Forgot to include a few technical notes. Galaxy in background is photos from NASA added to a large sphere with alpha channel. The Plasma is not post-work. The fractals were made in Apophysis, placed on 2 dimensional plane with alpha and glow channel added, then rendered with the ship. It was the only way I could think of to get realistic reflections on the ship. Thanks to all.

Brilliant design and concept behind the ship structure- then on top of that- the effects and multilayered work on the finished piece is quite remarkable- probably the most effective use of KPT fractal flame I have ever seen!

That's a beautiful model, nice clean elegant lines. Excellent composition, too, the flowing lines of the plasma is quite beautiful (even if it probably was deadly to the crew!) and the whole thing looks super!

Ok I'm amazed. How in the world did you get the background effects to reflect on your ship!

I know an image is really good when I can't think of any combination of words that really does it justice. I absolutely love the ship and those reflections are primordial. Thanks for the technical note, I'm going to have to try that. Amazing work.

That's the sexiest looking ship I've ever seen, the way in which you've applied different artwork and rendered this deserves real merit too. Please do more of this ship - it's Awesome (I'd give this a six if I could)
