To me the post work is overzealous in detail contrasts but overall I do like this and would love a shot at it myself.

I like this. When I first saw HDR results, I didn't like what I saw...thinking it looked way too over processed. But you know what? There are instances when some additional processing for added eye appeal works just fine for me. This is such an instance. After all that ramble, I hope this is HDR :-)
