Description

Sukhotai, in the NW part of Thailand, the oldest capital of the Siam kingdom, is one of the most beautiful archaeological sites of this country. The town was founded in 1238 by the king Rama Khamheng. This cultured sovereign created the Thai alphabet, took buddhism as the national religion, and established diplomatic relations with China. He invited Chinese artists, who developed an important production of potteries, carved wonderful sculptures and built temples. The Sukhotai art is influenced not only by the Chinese, but also by ancient Khmers, Burmese and Cinghalese. The Historical Park encompasses all the Sukhotai ruins. The inside of the fortified town shows the remains of 35 temples and other buildings, which received the help of the UNESCO for their maintenance. Today it is still a holy place for the Buddhists, where monks and ordinary people are praying. Best viewed full size. All comments welcome.

Sukhotaï, au Nord-Ouest de la Thaïlande, première capitale du Siam, est l’un des plus beaux sites archéologiques de ce pays. La ville fut fondée en 1238 par le roi Râma Khamheng. Ce monarque éclairé créa l’alphabet thaï, instaura le boudhisme comme religion nationale et établit des relations diplomatiques avec la Chine. Il fit venir des artistes chinois qui développèrent une importante production de poteries, exécutèrent des sculptures magnifiques et construisirent des temples. L’art de Sukhotaï montre l’influence des Chinois, mais aussi des anciens Khmers, des Birmans et des Cinghalais. Le Parc Historique englobe toutes les ruines de Sukhotaï. L’intérieur de la ville fortifiée comprend les vestiges de 35 temples ou autres bâtisses, qui ont reçu le soutien de l’UNESCO pour leur conservation.
