"Restoring" the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is also tragic, or if one prefers, absurd. It presumes a master like Michelangiolo did not know that the inside of a church was smoky, and planned accordingly in his painting. The only way the "restoration" makes sense is if they begin to burn oil lamps and candles again, and also encourage pipes, cigarettes, and cigars. Hilariously, it is exactly the "smokiness" that Da Vinci was after in oils--a great irony. But, naturally, only moderns have eyes and "science" and know what "unchanging and pristine" must be. As for sculpture outdoors and subject to the elements? Private "collections" of "art" began among the Romans, and were revived among the Italians of the Renaissance. For the Florentines, consult Cellini on Baccio Bandinelli's Cacus, a very public piece. Countless generations of Florentines have developed their eye and honed their biting wit thereupon.
