Description

Here's a snap I took some years ago. I haven't been to the Museum of Science of Industry in Chicago in a few years so this is the old display of the Ju 87 R-2 Tropical Stuka. This one was captured in North Africa and still has a number of bullet holes visible. It is only one of two Stuka's extant. (See debbielove's gallery for the other one in Britain.) If you google up the plane you will see that there is a much more lively display for the planes in Hall of Transportation today. The Red wing is the Texaco No. 13 Travel Air Model R racer of 1930. The United Airlines plane is a 1928 Boeing Model 40B. (See geoffgeoffp's gallery.)That's a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny in the background. The museum is a main attraction in Chicago and I recommend a visit if you are in town. They also have a Spitfire Mark 1, plenty of locomotives, the world's largest model RR, a coal mine (no kiddin'), and their prize possession is a Type IX U-boat - the U-505 captured by the U.S. Navy in June of 1944.

I've been looking for motivation to get to this museum in Chicago. This bumps the option up my things-to-do list:-) Glad you brought this photo out of retirement.

@neiwill: Not sure for the exact reason the wheel spats are missing from this particular plane. I do know that in North Africa and the Eastern Front that wheel spats and landing gear doors were removed because of build up of dust, sand or dirt, and snow and ice. No spats and doors made it easier for cleaning and servicing by the Luftwaffe crews.

A BRILLIANT 'UNRESTORED' STUKA!!!!! Beautiful....Kinda! And yes, you are right. The spats were removed quite a lot in the desert and in Russia, due to clogging up with dirt and dust etc! According to my 'know all' book of stuka's! Ha! Ha! it also, by way of an accident, added a couple of Mph to the top speed! No bad thing.... Thanks hugely, my friend. Of course! MORE!!!!!!! Rob.

Very cool shot of the Stuka ... and I saw that U-Boat in 1965 during a class trip. If I ever get back to the Midwest I'll make a point of visiting that museum again. Thanks for posting.

This is an excellent capture, thanks for pointing me to it. It's a wonderful camo scheme which i'm sure will be of great interest to neil and i've also seen picture of these with the spats removed and like others always assumed it was to save the wheels from getting clogged up and dust free in Africa and the Eastern front. Very rare, thanks so much for posting this :)
