Description
Located in the centre of the city in an area called "Ribera del Marisco", home of top quality entertainment.
The building occupied the area upon which the ancient women's prison was housed until the end of the 1970's, from which the name of the adjacent square "Plaza de la Cárcel" - Prison Square.
In 1983, during the demolition of the old jail to make way for what would be the new Hotel Los Cantaros ***, a series of 17th century urns were uncovered. The majority of these are now housed in the Municipal Museum, with a few left on exhibition in the hotel lounge as a testiment to the find.
The redesigned "Plaza de la Carcel" plays host a well maintained fountain, dating back to 1839, that was one of several dispersed throughout the town to provide water to the townsfolk. Boasting four taps, the main construction was built from a variety of materials from Tarifa, Algeciras, Seville and the San Cristobal sierra.
