Description

An image from my trip to England last year. This is Glastonbury Abbey, a 7th century monastery with a long and rich history. The site and the city are on a hill and is believed to be the legendary Isle of Avalaon. When the surrounding marsh land was flooded, the hill would have been an island. In 1191, grave of a man and woman buried in a hollow oak trunk were discovered just outside the Lady Chapel, which is next to this, the main church. Incsribed on a leaden cross over the the oak trunk was the inscription: "Here lies interred the famous King Arthur on the Isle of Avalon". In 1278, with great ceremony, and attended by King Edward I and his queen, the remains were moved and buried under the high altar of the main church here. If you will view this at full size, you will see a small copper colored marker near ground level in the very center of the church. But some historians believe this was a publicity stunt to raise money to rebuild the church when it burned down in 1184. I prefer to believe noted historian and author Geoffrey Ashe, who was our guide for the afternoon here. So, if you are a believer in legends, here sleep King Arthur and Queen Guinavere on the Isle of Avalon. Thank you very kindly for your views and comments.

Oh yes, yes, yes...I believe, I believe, I believe!!! Stellar ambiance evident in this marvelous capture of the legendary monastery, Maria. Just like a painting. And an excellent narration of the information. Was there any mention of Sir Lancelot during the tour?
