Description

Contemporary stained glass windows in a Lutheran church here in my hometown. These windows face west and the time of day was just about noon...consequently, I have a little shadow from the roof eves at the top of the windows. Thanks for stopping by. Bill:)

Yes, with tara, I like the light on the windowsill, very painterly, very soft especially in that shadow. Those are the kinds of things you want from stained glass: Its effects from being important as the actual panes themselves. It's a modern design (medieval stained glass, for instance, would never use such a stylized bird), and yet it's amazing how even modern feels ageless. That's stained glass for you...You got a lot of dark, which is fitting for stained glass—it speaks most eloquently when it has nothing else interfering. So it's the key player. Very nicely done. And yes, the lack of outside shadows helps. It's hard enough to capture this as it is, I'd imagine, outside shadows would make it more difficult...(You may know this, but in the medieval cathedral, the stained glass—the uppermost story, the "clearstory" [literally, clear level]—was conceived as the connection between earth and heaven; and the light shining through it was symbolic of a divine light; and the stories told in the glass were therefore illumined by heaven itself. And all the architectural parts of the church—the pillars, arches, etc—led the eye up to the clearstory where at last you saw heaven's light pouring through. This was very dramatic when you consider how dark these structures were.)
