Description
MojoWorld/PS7 Dragonri Tweaks
This took Too damn Long to Render hence the title, 16 hours at 1480x800 and an AA of 4 and GD of 6. Took forever to try and tweak things around to get it to be that speedy and then it ends up with Bad water, sometimes it just doesn't pay to keep plugging.
Thanks for the L@@k

From memory Len, Voronoi is one of the slowest Basis' to render due the complexities involved. A good indicator is to flick into Wireframe & look at the base mesh thats being used. If thats noisy (lots of polygons) & ontop of that you have lots of displacement...well you may as well expect long render times. In addition Water will increase the times. Things like Reflections & certianly refractions also add to the time...top that off with the render settings & you`ll have a fair mix in the pot to brew. A good tell tale, is to setup a tiled render 1/10th of the image...if that tile takes 1hr to render...you know its going to be a long wait. This isnt a definitive but a kind of rule of thumb that I use...cos the 1st tile could be just sky that renders quickly. Lots of terrain stuff in this shot. You may want to experiment with sunlight values also(for artistic results only) from 1.0 to 1.6-ish. I have used sunlight at 4 before with the light almost at nighttime...just for that particular shot :) Hope it helps.

The other members of the Content Team used to call me crazy for rendering at GD=4! The 'Old Ones' (the ones who made us) tended to have complex fractal-structures and rendered at about GD=1.5. The modern trend seems to be more simple structures with higher GD settings. Each to his/her own, although these clouds almost look solid... Star Trek TOS reference ;)

Excellent vista and realistic render!!!

"Too long" still seems to have paid off...the clouds are excellent, as is the vista.

I like the mossy rock texture and the overcast atmosphere, kool result. I have many render blow outs and long render times, so if you want great results or just experimenting, you just need a PS3 for those long waits ! ~Cheers~

the sky and land fit so well together ... the scene is fantastic ...

this one is a very subdued and moody Len world ...I like it ::

None the less I love the ground texture,it does have a dragon look. I also love the cloud spray,I have witnessed it by looking up at the sky.

Lotsa good tips from Woz there Len.....In the past I've rendered large scale poster sized images for 5 days and not been happy with the results....small test renders are a good way to decide wether or not the rendertime is worth it.
