Description

The Black Bull - Haworth - Yorkshire At a first glance possible not a remarkable place but Haworth in Yorkshire is the home of the Bronte sisters. Whilst the sisters went about their lives in a godly manner their brother Branwell seemed more content to spend his evenings drinking in the Black Bull. Directly opposite the pub is the Apothecary shop where Branwell Bronte bought laudanum, an opium derived drug. The shop is sill there today and is certainly an amazing site to see and enter. In January 1843 after several jobs including portrait painter and being a clerk at Luddenden Foot station from which he was dismissed over deficiencies in the accounts, his sister Anne Bronte managed to secure post of tutor for Branwell with the Robinson family at Thorp Green. In July 1845 he is dismissed from his post as tutor, It was discovered that he had an affair with Mrs Robinson. For the next three years Branwell's state physically and mentally take a rapid decline due to his dependence on drink and opium and an increased state of self pity and worthlessness. When he hears of the death of Mr Robinson he attempts to try to rekindle his relationship with Mrs Robinson which results in failure. On the 24th September 1848 Branwell died of chronic bronchitis / consumption, aged 31. The church stands over the pub as if to signify a dominance of good over evil.Behind the church is the Bronte Parsonage where the Bronte family lived.Further beyond are the moors where the sisters would walk.A few miles further on are the remains of Top Withens on which it is said Emily Bronte based the location for Wuthering Heights.A few miles away are the remains of Whycoller Hall which is said to be where Charlotte Bronte based Ferndown Manor in her book "Jane Eyre"

A rich photo packed with so much to see. As someone who majored in English many years ago...it is wonderful to read all the info on the Bronte family and their surroundings. Right into my favorites! Thanks.

Beautiful photography and postwork. It just goes to show that the previous generations were not much better than the rest of us lol.. no matter how they portrayed themselves in their fictional literature. Excellent work!!!!

It looks like a stage set...or maybe the term, hyper-real, would be more like it. It's almost spooky.
