Description

I took a lot of pictures during my long weekend away. I tried to remember to shoot things I considered to be "ordinary," keeping in mind that not everyone lives here! You may find something of interest in a scene I would not normally think to photograph. This is a shot from the Anacortes/Lopez ferry. It was a gray, cloudy, drizzly day ... as you can see! I'm not quite sure what to tell you about this. Our sky here looks like this frequently. Our landscape is gray and green and blue. We have an average of 75 cloud-free days per year. People who move here from out of state find this to be depressing ... I love it. The dull colors, the clouds, the drizzle, the rain ... it feeds my soul. Take me from this environment, and I wither. For me, this is the most peaceful view in the world. It was a wonderful start to the weekend!

This is a huge vista. It's what I noticed when I visited, how surrounded by water the entire area is. A beautiful, calm view!!

Nice pic! Having done a lot of flying in central and southern California, I was a bit set back by the weather in Washington when we first got there. The conditions were generally high overcast which was still fine for flying...just cut down long range visibility a bit. These conditions about the ferry look just like I remember them. Pretty country.

I can see why you love it! But I need more days than that with clear sky, although it would kill me to live anywhere cloudless!

this is the view I think of when I think Puget Sound... and I'm with you all the way on the weather; my reverse SAD hits me even on the 75 sunny days we have here! Rain, snow, clouds--it all energizes me.

Beautifully captured Tara. It brings back memories of when I was stationed there. It ultimately became depressing to me, because of the constant clouds. I have seen more variations of precipitation there than anywhere else. But now, since I live in Arizona with just about constant sunshine, which I take for granted, I sight likec this gets me exited. I went up there several time since then and at one time spent several days on the Olymbic Peninsula, in the Hoh Rainforest, Neah Bay, on the Hurricane Ridge, Port Townsend. I had hoped for rain and hiking on the trails of the forest, and wouldn't you know, not a drop of rain in four days. That had to be a record of sorts for this area. When we were flying we found that the layer of clouds was usually only about 10,000-ft. high. All the big peaks, Mt. baker, Glacier Peak, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, and further south Mt. Shasta were sticking out. The one that always played a minor rule, and was generally ignored by us, was Mt. St. helens since it was only 9,400-ft or so. Mt. St. Helens didn't come to my attention until it blew its top in 1981. Anyway, the climate around Pt.Monnt in Chile, about 40 degrees south, is similar to the climate in Wahington around Seattle.

Oh sorry, I fail to see the ordinary in the exotic. One has just to read Sig's comment realize some of you live in a beautiful place - not sure about the gray skies though!

Actually, it's depressing when you consider that people need Vitamin D from sunlight, and Old Sol to create shadows for photographers to capture amazing light and dark compositions. I would be lost, virtually downtrodden, Vincent van Gogh style, without natural light and shadow subjects. But on the other side of the matter, who needs skin cancer and melanoma? At least you get rain up there. PWL, anyone?

as in painting (which you know), there's an art to simple landscapes of water, land & sky; and so many do it 'obviously', because it's so easy. What I so like about this is that the composition is obvious on 'paper', but your proportions & pov are beautiful. Can't even describe it, it's just there; and the way the mountains sit on the water's edge, and your pov gives the water an almost solid feeling. I really like this. And as for the grays, they can be very rich of course & mixed with blues and all kinds of other hues—much more then 'mere gray' as so many call it. Woody Allen loves to shoot in this kind of light. (That isn't necessarily an inspiration for some, I realize, but just thought I'd mention it.) I really like this photo. A lot.
