Description
Info from Texas Highways magazine.
As early as 1569, Spanish physician Nicolas Monardes wrote that the flower's parts represented the "passion" of Christ on the cross.
Ten petals represent the disciples(minus Peter and Judas), five stamens depict Christ's wounds, and three knobbed stigmas, his nails on the cross. A circle of fringy filaments recall the crown of thorns placed on Christ's head.
In 1735 Carl Linnaeus named the genus Passiflora because of the religious symbolism.
