Description

This is yet another quick-skirmish post: the end result of becoming accustomed to my new camera. I haven't named it yet, but I'm sure that'll happen...it's always nice to have tools, doodads, and appliances with names that somehow fit what they do and their role in your own life. That's something I learned from Pavl of all people, though he has yet to name his shoes--something he's told me on occasion that he plans to do. This is a bit of Chicago--shortly after a spring rain. The city has been abuzz with all sorts of energy, as the IOC was (at the time of this picture) due to arrive and view the city's highlights. In anticipation of their arrival, the Mayor of the city had everything "all lit and prettified" as some south side resident of the city may say.

Well, it does look very warm and modern; not warm temperature-wise, but the light quality...pretty lines. How long are you in the area for?

Another great shot, Chip.Nicely captures the contrast between the classic brawniness of the older skyscrapers and the glib blandness of a lot of the modern ones. I particularly like the way you captured the garish lighting of the new Trump Tower reflecting in the sidewalk next to the old McDonald's with the For Rent sign in the upper window. The sarcasm of the title made me laugh. Very nice.

A great shot - looks golden and almost pure ... and far from the grittiness of Chicago. CC

Awaiting the arrival of mankind...the daylight, when the nuances of the night lighting and soft shadows disappear.

OMG. I'm so used to seeing your images of Prague ... I just got a hit of the huge culture shock you must have experienced coming back here!!! Oh honey ...

Not all that unlike downtown Toronto in some respects. The U of T has many quiet spots such as this which are beautiful at night.

interesting Chip, how you made a walkway seem like a river; and, as in your Halsted shot, you caught the glitter of lights in the night, with that pretty/ugly yellowish hue that reminds most of us here of the sulphur lamps (though it may just be the cumulation of the building-lights themselves, in this shot...) You also got the glitter of the windows, and that strange 'greenish night glare' of all that glass shining from the lights of other buildings. A very un-Chicago view only in that you don't see a lot of curves & strange angles in high-rise districts here, and photographers are forever challenged to find such curves because of the city's ever-linear layout. You caught the irony of this city's glitter when compared to its neighborhoods, going out forever into the night. You also caught beauty as well, and the front-face it presents when challenged to look good for the world. (The IOC.) Your Chicago shots have just the right amount of genuine majesty and jaundiced irony (via jaundiced yellows) to capture the dichotomy of many great American cities. FIne work, and it's so nice to see this city captured in all its complexity & irony, and not just its touristy glitz.

This has a great quality to it. I could see it being a scene out of one of your stories, pick a universe or a year. Very well done.

this captures the feel of night in the city very well ... it makes me feel like I am bathed in light as walking down the deserted walkway ... excellent settings ... not over exposed, just right to capture the mood!

The shiney wetness of the street really is the "finishing touch" in my mind. I thought it was a pond or waterway or something, until I looked closer and found it was a wet street .. and of course after reading your comments. I'm not fond of big cities, but your photo does make it enticing.
