Description
The beautiful Caerhays Castle where I took the photographs of the Magnolias posted previously. The castle and it's surrounding estate has a long and varied history. From 1370 - 1840 it was owned by the Trevanion family. Basically it was a deer park which proved expensive to run. The last Trevanion retreated to Paris in fast order and the Bailiffs took over the estate in 1840. It lay empty for years until in 1853 Michael Williams of Scorrier and Burncoose purchased it. By the time this occurred, it was almost derelict and had ducks swimming in ponds which had taken over some of the rooms. The Williams family is responsible for the introduction of the Magnolia into Britain. They have bred many new and beautiful hybrids which continues to this day. Lots more history I haven't written (it would fill a book!), but just a taste for you. Thank you for taking the time to look. ^-^
