There is probably a python script you can add to your scripts folder that will do it. If not, I'm pretty sure I saw a tute somewhere on animating tank tracks. It was either on Blender.org or youtube. I use blender fairly often myself and there is a lot of info out there.

Try the following simple procedure: Select the curve and switch to edit mode. Add a Hook with empty (Ctrl H -> 1). switch to object mode and turn the curve (ONLY the curve) until the knot disappears. Apply the hook modifier in the editing buttons Now the empty can be deleted. thats it
