Description

These are wild flowers and not very common sight one of the best places is here in Wiltshire at Cricklade. Cricklade is home to 80% of the UK's Snakeshead Fritillaries, so-named after the snake-skin pattern and the shape of its bud before it opens. The flowers' growth cycle coincides with the hay season - they complete their natural annual cycle of growth and seeding before the hay is cut. Trampling, grazing and chemicals are the enemies of these delicate wild flowers. Because the meadow has been left to grow hay for the spring and summer, the fritillaries are left untouched for their growing period.

A beautiful shot.. last Sunday I could see them as well. In the Netherlands they are called 'kievitsbloem' and they are very rarely seen in nature.

An interesting checkerboard type pattern on this flower. Unusual and I've never seen one. Beautiful photo. Yes, herbicides and pesticides will ruin our environment. I can see many drastic changes in the flora and fauna in our area. Very upsetting.

Love this flower especially the design on it. Could you have used a small strobe in this situation??????, for more illumination resulting in more detail. Happy Holidays to You and Yours.
