Description
This Curtiss P-40 'Warhawk', tail number 11456, painted in the colors of the 'Flying Tigers', the American Volunteer Group (AVG) that operated under Claire Chennault in the Burma/China Theater of War, crashed on 5 April 2009 into the waters near Smith Point County Park, Long Island.
The owner and pilot, Robert Baranaskas, 61, did not survive. Baranaskas was practicing maneuvers while his son was videotaping them. The cause of the crash is not known at this time and is under investigation by the FAA.

What a tragedy for the loss of both the man and this magnificent machine... It would take a true passion to maintain this beautiful old bird.. so, although a very sad event, the pilot and his beloved plane at least got to go together.

Reading Airshow, right? Sorry to see these great warbirds crash, but it's worse to see them on the ground as "hanger queens" Keep em flying!
