The earlier Greeks did not know the true arch, though even the Myceanaeans knew the false one. True arch--thus also true dome--was apparently Roman or perhaps Etruscan,and is seen, for example, in the Cloaca Maxima still at Rome. From sewer to vault, the principle is the same. The Pantheon taken sideways--who is numb enough to sit, and even rent seats under that? Faust is nearly over with.
