Description
The Auster (upper of the two aircraft with blue trim) was designed in England by C.G. Taylor, who had originally worked in the United States with Piper Aircraft and had been responsible for the design of the Piper Club.
The Auster came into it's own during World War 2 when it was used extensively as an air-observation platform, and in the post-war years a bewildering variety of models were offered to the civilian market.
The Auster J-1 B Aiglet appeared in 1950 and around 30 of these aeroplanes were imported into Australia, usually in kit form for assembly by Kingsford Smith Aviation in N.S.W.

For those who may be interested, the lower of the two aircraft was apparently a Percival Proctor. A brilliant aircraft designer and pilot, Edgar Percival was born in Albury, New South Wales in 1898. Following service with the Royal Flying Corp during World War 1, Percival operated his own charter company in Australia before returning to England where he was appointed as an Air Ministry test pilot. His interest in aircraft design led him to form his own aircraft company at Gravesend, Kent in 1934. Percival’s aircraft were noted for their graceful lines and outstanding performance. Charles Kingsford Smith flew a Percival Gull Four named ‘Miss Southern Cross’ from England to Australia in the record breaking time of 7 days 4 hours and 44 minutes. The New Zealand aviatrix, Jean Batten, also used the Percival Gull to fly from England to Australia in October 1936. The Proctor was the military communications version of the Gull. It was designed to carry four people in comfort and was powered by a 200 hp Gipsy Six engine.

Good pic here. Excellent rundown on two airplanes that were probably ahead of their time when they were designed and built. I can see the Piper Cub influence in the Auster. I have a lot of time flying Super Cubs. These airplanes look nicely cared for...that always makes me feel good!

Now I'm really impressed! Great looking AND cared for aircraft! Had a guess at the lower one from the picture before seeing your comment. WAS RIGHT! Amazed myself! Top work, my friend. Have you got a shot of the Proctor?? Love you forever if you have? Ha! Take care mate. Rob.
