Description

This is an old school class at St Fagans which dates back to Edwardian times with some implements of punishment such as the cane, and I assume to be a paddle and ? the finger clamps to prevent children from writing with the left hand! Frowned on at those times as being the sign of evil or criminal tendancies!! From which we get such phrases as Cack Handed.. Thanks for taking time to view and for any comments etc you care to make

Great pic Danny and if they tried to use most of those forms of punishment today they would lock the teachers up. Sad that now they are afraid to discipline the kids in any way.

Your style shines through in this. I saw the thumb and knew immediately it was your work. This is clean and composed with an artist's eye. Great light and the objects included are extremely interesting. I didn't know about the hand clamp at all! South-paws run in our family with 2 sons, one grandson and one grand daughter all leaning left. In spite of it being from a more historic time, I feel a bond with the shot - much like my old school room when I started first grade.

Very cool pic...my dad used to tell us stories of teachers frowning on using the left hand and what not...wow. When I was in grade 4 we were being taught how to write in 'cursive'...my dad actually punished me for using a bad word (cursive)...he still was not impressed even after my teacher tried explaining it was what they called that type of handwriting. Times sure have changed. Awesome nostalgic post :-)

Wonderful shot Danny. Fills me with nostalgic thoughts about my first grade school building. I remember it as being intimadating to a first grader. Brand new building opened the next year...but these memories linger. Only completely new thing to me are the finger clamps. Hmmmm, I knew there was something funny about left handers. LOL

Wonderful photo of this olden classroom. Yes, educational methods have certainly changed. But I imagine those kids learned some good lessons which they never forgot. I have serious doubts about the quality of education these days.

I always enjoyed school, especially the early grades, and so glad there were no paddles and finger clamps. You captured quite a mood with this photo, and I'm imagining those desks filled with children. CC

Love the lighting here, adds a bit of joy to a gloomy place that was once filled with the dour faces of sad children tired of their punishments. Ah, the good ol' days. Great capture!
