Description
Another pub in Leek, Staffordshire. It made me think of some classic WW2 movies. Do you remember in The Longest Day (1962)what Richard Burton, as British Flight Officer Campbell, tells an awe-struck guy, who had asked him "Are you one of The Few?". Cynical and romantic hero, Burton replies: "What worries me is that The Few are getting fewer and fewer!" (or something like that).
The pilots of the Battle of Britain (1940) have been known as The Few since Churchill said: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few". The guy had a knack of saying sentences that stick in one's mind. The Battle of Britain was told in a classic film (1969), starring the elite of British actors. The advisors were some of the veterans of the real battle, Hugh Dowding for the British and Adolf Galland for the Germans. This pub could easily feature in those films.
Thank you for your kind comments.

What a great sign and photo. Your notes add all the right filling in between. I've recently added a book to my modest library strangely enough titled, "The Few" by Alex Kershaw. First book written about American pilots who rushed to England to join the RAF in its' valiant fight against the Luftwaffe in 1940.

Great shot of part of the English Heritage , the local pub !, unfortunately now closing at 30 a week!! Interesting mistake in the film The Longest Day with Richard Burton , there is no such rank in the Royal Air Force as Flight Officer , there is a Flying Officer or a Flight Lieutenant . Cheers Steve
