Point lights are actually better to use than spotlights for a lot of short range lighting. They6 have the drawback of being omnidirectional but if they're dim enough they can be placed directly beside a face or close enough to it to light almost nothing else. Beleive it or not one of the easiest programs to experiment with lighting in is DAZ/Studio. All lights in DAZ/Studio start at the initial start point for all objects so they're easy to find and of a size that makes them easy to see and manipulate. Also at this point since DAZ as yet doesn't have AO lighting it's easy to see the effect each light is having. It's a great program to experiment in.
