The "photograph" has some seeming success with waterdrops purely because it is a mechanical record (and distortion) of light. That is less an etymological statement than a confirmation of the clear-eyed who first came up with "photograph" as a name. Vermeer was a narrow sensationalist--a simple-minded functor of the camera obscura.
