Oil on canvas 30x40 inches Final Title:
THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD.
Well it's been a week since the last step posted and I was unable to work on it for more than an hour or two at a time, I've skipped ahead to the end .
For those of you who have followed along with me on this, I'll describe the steps from where we left off, Thank you all for your patience and interest in this. Due to circumstances I probably would'nt have finished this piece, if it was'nt for your gracious comments and support, Thank you!!!!!!!!
Picking up from the last step, It came to my attention that the hill was to dominant and cartoonish, so I mixed a glaze of medium and van dyke brown, yellow ochre and mars black, after coating the hill the sky was allso coated with the same mixture and rubbed off some with a paper towell here and there to different degrees , till recieving the desired affect, the intent was to try to achieve that weird color that happens sometimes after a storm.
Moving to the wall, some more texture was aplied using a pallette knife, after this was dry, it was glazed here and there with thinned yellow ochre , trying to obtain a wet and somewhat satureated look as if it was wet from a recent rainstorm.
Then added the greenery behind the 3 centurions, to help establish the perspective of the road.
Moving to the lead actor I finished his armor, changed the gesture of his left hand ... And next his face, which is the most important factor in this painting, as his face has to tell most of the story , he had to look deep in thought and somewhat perplexed by the events that had transpired only a few hours earlier, yet I wanted him to have the look of a rugged and battle proven soldier .... a man who has seen it all!!! Surpisingly the face came easy with a minimun of brushstrokes .... I had fun painting it ... I think I had help!!!!
Lastly the spear and the shield ..... finish!!!
Once again you are all much apreciated!!!!!!!!
