Description
Perhaps the first instinct one would have would be to knock that nest down and do so quickly. Au contraire. These little guys are yellow jackets, not to be confused with the much larger, and annoying and aggressive paper wasps.
I've seen these little fellows for two seasons now, their having built a home in the light fixture hanging in my patio cover. They come and go without disturbing a human soul, seemingly oblivious to our existence. Even though they could easily do otherwise -
Perhaps a lesson could be learned here...
Thanks for looking in!

I firmly believe in living in harmony with nature but unfortunately, nature doesn't always agree. You must have a very mellow vibe... I do not seem to get along as well with any flying bugs. Absolutely fabulous shot. I love seeing the development of the embryos.

They love my deck and build a nest out there every summer. I've never gotten this close to one though, not quite that brave.

Beautiful! A man after my own heart! On page 20 of my gallery is a pic called 'nest box' which was home to a large colony of wasps; I have also had a nest in the coalshed, in the pantry roof and in the compost heap and they have never caused any trouble! Do have a peep if you have time.

Super, moody image, and I really like your commentary...

Interesting... I wonder which part of the country you live in. Here, they are extremely aggressive. I would rank them below the africanized honey bee from what I've seen they can do. I survived a really bad attack only because I dove under the surface of a deep pool in a creek. One cannot sit outside and enjoy bar-b-que with out letting them join in or you'll be stung for sure. Great capture.
