Description

He stood outside the cockpit of his spaceship and watched the rickety little exploratory spaceship fly by. He was one of the last of the Martian androids. His memories spun inside his positronic brain as he recalled what brought him this far. He still didn’t realize he'd been in stasis for billions of years. His makers were an incredibly advanced race of beings. Mars had been their home. It was a beautiful bright lush blue planet full life and promise. Then tragedy struck! A rogue asteroid crashed through feeble warning systems designed to help divert collisions with large foreign objects. This huge asteroid smashed into Mars. Devastation was swift and complete. The force of the impact ripped most of the atmosphere off the planet and sent it out into space. All life on the surface met a swift and painful death. There were a few exploratory spaceships still in outerspace who witnessed the catastrophe. With no other options, they turned their attention to the nearest planet that could sustain them. ‘EARTH’. They reached ‘EARTH’ resolved to start anew. As the eons passed, they forgot most of their technology and regressed into a primitive superstitious race. But back on Mars, our hero, the android, happened to be in a secret cavern a mile below the surface when the asteroid collided. The blast sealed off the entrance. Efforts to escape the cavern by the creators with him were futile. They would surely run out of air long before they could tunnel out. To conserve energy, the android was shut down and placed in a stasis chamber for preservation. Sadly, the creators weren’t able to save themselves as they eventually succumbed to oxygen starvation. A few billion years later, an unmanned spacecraft from earth failed to land on Mars. As it passed over the planet, its mixed up computer managed to send out an erratic radio signal that penetrated down into this long forgotten cavern. This signal reactivated the android. He emerged from his stasis chamber fully intact. He soon realized what had happened to his creators. How could he ever hope to get back outside? Luckily, a lot of shifting takes place over several billion years, even on a dead planet. As the android scanned where the old entry shaft used to be, he discovered gaping openings. Small passages leading up appeared in many places. Using some crude digging machines, he began the difficult task to get back to the surface. With his fusion reactor power core, he was able to work non-stop. A rough calculation of his core power told him he still had enough energy for several thousand Martian years. The makers had given the android an emotion program along with much other sophisticated programming. When he finally broke through to the surface, you could hear his loud cries of joy resounding throughout the deep dark chambers below. But there was no life anywhere! Searching his own memory, he recalled some space ships still in space when the asteroid struck. What would have become of them? There was a planet called 'EARTH' nearby. Maybe they went there. In the cavern, one spacecraft still existed, surprizingly in repairable shape. After getting the power back online, he used laser beam weapons onboard to widen the escape shaft. Once on the surface, he plotted a course for ‘EARTH’ in the hopes of finding some of his creators. Near the moon, a very primitive strange little craft flew by him. He calculated it must've come from ‘EARTH’. He stopped his ship and crawled out onto the deck to observe the craft fly by. Encouraged at the spaceship sighting, he felt certain he would soon be reunited with his creators. Many surprizes await him for he still hasn’t calculated the length of time he had been in stasis.
