Description

I havnt posted any vue images for awhile, I am focusing on watercolor paintings. So here is one I did as preparation for another painting project. Some bits scavenged from 'steam-works' from Daz and modified. Some built from primitives in vue. Texturing in Vue. (A bit of aliasing remained in places even though I used fairly high AA settings)

I know you're not going for realism, but IMO, a bit of GI would help 'ground' a few of the objects. Take the orange cylinder in the foreground. It appears to 'float.' Adding the correct amount of GI will create a bit of shade around the base and give it a bit more of a 'seat.' Also, the orange cylinder looks like it uses a reflection map, which doesn't make sense as a very dark shadow falls directly on it, making the material look very unreal. Compositionally and conceptually, it is interesting. I would like to see a different application of mats-- more consistently 'new' or 'old.'

Chipp - Interesting comments, thanks. I might try GI out of curiosity, but it wont ground the orange cylinder - it DOES float. (You can see its shadow a bit higher in the picture and to the left). There are other floating bits in various places, and non continuous pipes... I havnt used reflection maps anywhere. I used a mixture of new and old materials on purpose. I also used moss on aluminum upside down(the moss on the top). I wanted it all that way. I can understand if the chaotic bits disturb some viewers, but I need them.

great abstract composition, you've really taken control of the volume of the space

Very interesting. Yes, very chaotic but knowing you that isn't a big surprise. :-) I like the mixture/contrasts old and new, dry (ground) and wet (rain clouds), vertical and horizontal, mechanical and nature. The bits missing here and there make this feel strange, which is good because it's very unexpected. The composition is also unexpected. Everything seems very static piece by piece but because the image is almost completely full, this somehow gives the feeling of a dynamic image. Good work!

Interesting project.I love the contrast with the "new" and the "old".I´m curious about moss, because its existence is not natural there...but i can already see something underwater...:)).waiting for it!!

i've taken forever to comment on this image because i'm not sure quite what to make of it. that's my own denseness, i think. usually i have a clear feeling from your images. not that i'm claiming any great insight; they're probably not the ones you put into it exactly. but this one leaves me curious to see where you will go. i like the mix of colors, shapes and differences in materials. i really look forward to the translation into watercolor. i think the GI would be helpful, because the item doesn't float in 3d (which, with GI, would actually create the occlusion talked about), it floats in 2d. because your shadows have no blur, the cylinder is just disconnected from the ground. what i find interesting about this image is how little organic is depicted. there's no figure, no animal, and no plant to act as a focal point or major player. combined with the sere ground, i expect the final watercolor to be very interesting and unique among your work.
