Description

No matter how tired I might get of certain aspects of living in Chicago. (Blatant, institutionalized corruption, the highest taxes in America, an infrustructure that's coming apart at the seams, an especially odious version of the gentrifiblandness that has been sweeping America for the past couple of decades, and the constant, nagging feeling that you're being swindled.) I have to admit that going downtown, or along the lakefront remains pretty spectacular. It reminds me of why I continue to live here, and why tourists, justifiably, find this city so fascinating. Photographed on Michigan Avenue, near the Art Institue of Chicago on April 17th, 2009.

I once read somewhere that a picture has to be perfectly centered in order to be good. I also read, not too long ago, that symmetry actually stunts human development--our dependence on symmetry often keeps us well within the boxes that often cramp our thinking. This shot violates the first "rule" stated and confirms the second observation, brilliantly. I love the perspective, as it zooms down one side of the picture, actually passing the dead-spot, most commonly called "the center." The details are also wonderfully asymmetrical. It's an up-front, in your face urban street shot, and the details are amazing. The use/control of light is spot on, and the rich tones of the red taxi just add an extra pop to this already great shot. This is, most definitely, a fantastic addition to your gallery.

I like the towering edifice on the right contrasting with the promise of nature on the left; I went on the Segway tour of the waterfront there a couple of years ago, and it's a gorgeous place to see and be.
