Stunning aircraft, 3-way and Pilot! I believe he didn't start flying in a front line unit until October 1942! 352 'kills' in that shorter time! Amazing skill. Stunning picture. Rob.

I assume he flew the 109 throughout his front-line service. If so a score of 352 aircraft destroyed says much for its continued efficiency. Other German aces also flew the Me 109: Gerhard Barkhorn (301 victories) Gunther Rall (275). These three mostly fought on the Eastern Front, but another ace, Hans-Joachim Marseille had a record of 158 victories against pilots in the West.

fine work, as usual. i think the persistence of German aces with the 109 shows the importance of pilot familiarity as a factor in combat effectiveness and survival. Hartmann turned down the chance to switch from the 109 to the 262, and would later resign over the introduction of the F104 Starfighter.
