Description

J.S.'s room was comfortable enough, but he preferred to spend some time musing in a more inspiring place. Near one of the "cavern" exit doors there were the gigantic statues of two unknown people. Even if they were millennia-old, and half covered with stalactites and stalagmites, they were still imposing and awesome. They were frozen in the stone in a sitting position, and J.S. had managed to build up a snug nook with GOD's military blankets, Peter had given to him. After the latest metaphorical as well as literal slap in the face, he was chewing over his next move, when Eve came in. "Ehm - she began, shuffling a foot on the floor and looking embarassed - I don't know what occurred to me, I'm so sorry.." "No offence taken" he replied magnanimously. "It may happen. The stress, you know." J.S. let pass some time, so she could digest his words, then he added: "You have a vicious right hook, don't you? You almost tore my nose from my face!" "Did I?" she asked worriedly - You're teasing me!" She cried then, seeing his dazzling grin. Eve didn't go away immadiately after that, but stayed with him. She looked at the night sky of New Mars. The cloudy sky had cleared into one of the very rare and short cloudless night of New Mars. The winds that usually swept the planet and pushed around the clouds had relented for a while and the stars could shine shamelessy in the portion of the quadrant they could see from the cavern entrance. "Can we see the Earth from here?" Eve asked. "No, you can't see the Sun, our star, from here. It's too far and small. But you can see Regulus, the giant blue star of the Rogues. Over there!" J.S. pointed to the enemy sun. She moved her head to see it, but she couldn't. J.S. thought "I'll try my luck" and told her: "Why don't you came and sit here, on the gods' lap? You'll see it from here." Sensing her insecure, he added: "I don't bite, and I trust you." She nodded and went to lie close to him on the GOD's blankets. "They aren't gods" she explained, hinting at the statues with a small movement of her chin. "They are the captain of the ship which brought our ancestor here and his ship, represented by the woman. The legend says that he was killed and the ship went mad." "How can a ship go mad?" asked J.S. in disbelief. Eve shrugged. "It's a very old legend, maybe it's a figure of speech." "Well, make yourself comfortable on GOD's lap!" he joked, alluding to the "GOD PROPERTY" logo inscribed on the grey blankets. She smiled and lied close to him. J.S. swifty put his arm under her nape as a pillow and asked attentively: "Are you OK?" She nodded and he showed her the other stars. Pondering on the new development of Eve's behavior, J.S. knew that his fate was in the lap of the Gods and decided not to test his luck too much. It wasn't so easy, since Eve continued to ask questions on the stars using his stomach as a star map where to draw the routes with her index finger. Fortunately the wind started to blow with new vigor, and the clouds put a thick veil on the slice of sky they had spared for a little while. While Eve was relaxed with her head on the comfortable hollow of his shoulder, J.S. decided to have a nap. It was almost dawn, New Mars time. Eve spent some time watching his sharp profile, blacker against the black sky. She listened to his regular breathing. She smiled and started drowsing. Now that I've caught up, I'm going to go back on occasion and comment on some of my favs. I love this first moment of intimacy between them. JS was both taking it slow and easy and taking the opportunity to put his arm under the nape of her neck. Very adroit of him. Excellent narrative! I liked learning about the ship and captain as Eve told JS about the statues. Beautiful image! Wonderful render of the statues being swallowed slowly by the formations of the cave. Excellent poses and expressions. I like the way Eves hand seems to be tentatively reaching back to touch Jay's arm. Excellent blue tones and lighting!

Flavia, I didn't get to you in my last visit (to RR), only because reading takes a special concentration from me, and I wanted to sit with your work when I could really concentrate on your story line, your language, and of course your finely envisioned images. And unfortunately, I can't do 9 or 10 entries tonight (I'm doing maybe 3 or 4 comments in most galleries, this visit). But I'll try to do as many as I can, since I love keeping the thread. And I'm trying to return once a month, now, so I'll make up for it over time. Ok: I last left off with the episode before this---nothing like "keeping up"! this was written in April of 2009!--- so I'm picking up here. You have to know, it's reeeeeaaalllllly hard to come-in in the middle of a long serialized story---which is what I'd wind up doing if I commented on your summer 2013 entries. So: I'm going back to 2009, back when people lived in caves, and there was no electricity, and "cities" were a far-gone dream (and there were no computers, which may be why I didn't comment on this at the time), and books were scrapings on the walls of caves...way back then...But I see that Lucinda (myrrhluz) came here a year later (2010), so I don't feel QUITE so bad. But anyway, to the story. Now...while I don't remember everything that happened before this, I have a general idea. I like how you suggest all kinds of connections between your characters, but don't fulfill them. You do that alot in your episodes, and it's very alluring. And I like the combination of connection and cautious distance between them---trust and no-trust: It comes across very clearly. And I like that we find ourselves in this strange place, with those huuuuge statues above. And I love the image of Eve drawing maps on JS's stomach. I mean, whatever's going on between them, that's not a "non-connection" image: There's something going on beneath the surface. Terrific image. A very alluring episode, leaving us wanting more. The image: The stone people are wonderful! They're looking up as if they're dreaming of a better place. Almost like icons of a national dream. And yet they're stone, and blue-ish stone at that. (I realize some of that comes from the shadows.) And you weave the stalagmites and stalactites into the 2 statues, beautifully: They all flow-together as if the stalagmites/stalactites were part of the human limbs. You have J and E nestled into them very nicely, as if that space were made for them. And they're looking up in the same direction as the statues. It's a suggestive, intimate but monumental image; and it affirms what I've felt from the beginning, when I first came to your gallery---that you're a terrific imagist. And you did this all in low light, which you've articulated quite well, as we can make out the hues very nicely. A fine image to accompany this chapter. It has an intimate and looming feel.
