Description

Jetsam was fully recovering and stomped around on her crutches. Since the med-lab wasn't occupied any longer, J.S. decided to take the Rogue bull by the horns. In fact, you could accuse the Rogues of almost everything but having humanitarian tendencies. J.S. started checking the med-lab in every hardware component, almost de-assembling it piece by piece. Nothing at all. Thus he attached the software controlling the machines which made it up. When he was almost thinking that he was wrong, he noticed some files that had no reason to be in the system. He tried to open them, but they were encrypted. "More and more interesting." J.S. muttered, accepting the challenge. He began to try all the decryption algorithms he knew, to no avail. The challenge represented by the code cracking was so engrossing that J.S. skipped his dinner and even the new habit of relaxing on the GOD/gods's lap with Eve. The others started worrying. J.S. was on the verge of giving up when he chanced to notice the He-bot unemployed in a corner. He thought: "You need a machine to cheat another machine!" He coupled the He-bot to the med-lab and began working on the codes again. And after some swear and some sweat... Pandora's box was cracked open. J.S. was so excited that he gave He-bot five! Actually, PIG had made the He-bots programmed as if they "shared" human emotions. The others, who were waiting and observing nearby, interrupted their gentle chatting and exchanged puzzled glances and expressive gestures. "I've found what I was looking for!" J.S. cried, turning to share his enthusiasm with the Martians. Then he went on watching the decrypted files on the screen: "Son****itch" he exclaimed every few seconds. When he was finished, J.S. turned again to the others, who had been waiting patiently for hours and cried: "I must go back to the Headquarters on the Earth ASAP. I've just found I accomplished my mission." NOTE: Adam's gesture is typically Italian (non-obscene) meaning "What's happening?" or "What are you doing?". An episode filled with humor and sly irony. I like how you describe JS with a touch of humor, as we see his human-ness while he stumbles through these programs, trying to find the code(s). And you created "counterpoint" by having the others in the room looking-on with curiosity and a bit of unknowing. And the humorous touch of the high-five. (I'm sure they have those all over the cosmos, along with duuuuuude and far f----in' out! Hey, it could happen, who knows...) And you end with JS wanting to go back---which is a jolt to your readers, who are thinking: Really? He's leaving? What happens now! The image is serious and delightful. I did pick up Adam's gesture, have seen that among Europeans, and it's appropriate. You've got the characters nicely space out. If you ever watch Japanese movies and you should happen to take 4 hours to see Seven Samurai (hint---it's lonnnng), you'll see that Kurosawa (the director) has many scenes where the samurai are seated in a barn, where he spaces them in all kinds of skewed configurations, to suggest the differences between them---ie, between their personalities, their purposes, etc. Wonderful spacing and composition, for which he was justly praised (among the many marvels he works with the camera in that film). (The film has its flaws, but cinematically it's almost an encyclopedia of setups, composition, movement, you name it.) Well, you use that kind of spacing quite well here, delineating the different personalities of everyone in the scene. Then, the He-bot's high-five is nicely set apart by you, because you place his "high-5" arm above the shaded glass, so it's in pure white---nice touch! And Eve's legs follow the line of the wall. The whole image is on a diagonal, and the visual movement moves on a diagonal, and the angle---i'm speaking photographically here---allows us to see everyone separately, in a way that we couldn't, had you rendered this head-on or at a 90 degree angle to the characters. Good visual intuition. Even in 2009 (before there was running water) you had a fine sense of composing an image to separate and tell us things about the people in it. A delightful image to accompany the story...and the touch of red on that cushion is a nice burst in the middle of all those blues, greens, etc...More fine visual work.
