Description

European wasps, Vespula germanica. I found 40 or so in a rather large conifer tree they were feeding and hunting and are very aggressive I have been trying to get photographs of them for awhile now, but they are so fast and rarely do they hover but I manage to get a few, I like this one because he was so focused he forgot about me. Their sting is painful and multiple stings, or a sting in the throat, can be dangerous. Unlike bees, they can sting multiple times.

I had a superb nest of these in my little greenhouse in the hollow head of a sculpture. Their presence means is it so easy to go organic as they eat all the aphids etc! They aren't a nuisance unless you're eating outside, but we have solved it by putting a scrap of meat a few feet away, which they much prefer to jam! (The photo of this sculpture is way back in my gallery, called 'nest box'.) I sdo swell up if I get stung, but it has only happened twice in my life.
