Description


Ribblehead viaduct Designed by the engineer John Sydney Crossley. The first stone was laid on 12 October 1870 and the last in 1874. It is 104 feet (32 m) high and spans 440 yards (402 m). It is made up of twenty-four arches. It is located at the foot of the mountain of Whernside. The viaduct is curved, and so may be seen by passengers on the train. The only good thing about all this rain we keep getting is that it is really adding colour to the vegetation. Nice sky and pov in this shot.

An excellent capture of this engineering masterpiece David, I have yet to go on the Settle/Carlisle line, I intend to one of these days. It took a long time to build this viaduct, and in the process so many people died that the railway paid to have the local cemetery extended to accomodate them. Superb work and presentation. Bravo!!!!!
