Description
Once again oil on canvas 30x40"
These colors are truer to the original ... as I took it outside and shot it . As stated earlir the pallete has'nt changed at all ... except I added flake white to Jesus .. You can't see it here but in person you can ... That's the frustration of trying to transfer the physical to the digital ,.... as color is my main compositional tool these days !!
Allow me to axplain .... Most of my life I sucked at color !!!! And I was so aware of this shortcming. So in January of this year , after not painting for years .... And I do mean years>> I live in Iowa
In 1982 or so They had a show in Chicgo ... I saw the originals .... OH MY ... I aint.. an artist I'm a hack !!!!!!!
And I suspect that many here feel that there work could hang beside theirs !!!
I did'nt paint for years after seing this !!!!
It was so humbling ..... YOU Have to see The ORIGIGINALS!!!
I was standing in front of these tapestry sized paintings and felt every emotion .... I cryed and did not paint for years !!!!!!
I don't want you to think that I'm anti digital ..... as i have a Wacom digital tablet ..... And have used it a lot !!! I did airbrush nudes for years >> And then played with digital Nudes !!
By The way I burned All my nudes with the exceotionn of my bug paintings !!!!
The reason why I backed outa digital painting is... You can't tell one digital painter from the other!!!

Inspiring work!! Guess your days of "sucking" at color are truly over....lol Sometimes we really are our own worst critics....But if you are satisfied you never get any better so I understand your artist's eye. I had the same experience by going to the Smithsonian here in DC....I wondered how I ever thought I could be an artist...and still do....But the urge to create is stronger most times than my own doubts about it....As for telling one digital artist from another....well I thought that's what signature's were for...rofl digital or not..... Even the top experts in the world have been fooled by indistinguishable forgeries of the Masters so one could argue that traditional painters can't be told from one another.....(grin) I am so glad you are painting again and I wish you very happy creating!!!!! That is a beautiful painting, you're a fine artist!!!!! Actually, if you're familiar with a digital artist work, you can tell his/her work from others.

I know I'm my worst critic, especially when it comes to writing my stories. Great work!

A new and beautiful day! The painting is finished! And Tom has actually taken a good picture of it without unorderly books and trash as background! What is this? Is it kindly week in Iowa, or wherever he come from? Nice to see the colors in good light! It is of course a true genuine masterpiece, and we have learned a lot. The next time I hope that Tom will teach us about the mysteries of "underpainting". But that you can not distinguish one digital painter from another you know Tom is from Iowa where they always are exaggerating.. As I say, future artists will master both media just look at the young successful contemporary artists of today such as Stephanie Pui-Mun Law or Yukio Miyamoto for example. From Wikipedia, "She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1998 with a double BA degree in both Fine Arts and Computer Science." It is a very interesting FAQ at her website about her workflow. And for sheer technical brilliance there is no more brightly shining star than Yukio Miyamoto, the master of gradient mesh and the opacity masks! http://www.illustratorworld.com/users/yukio/ Miyamoto shows us that vector paintings can be the solution to printing real size works of art from the computer. With vector work and acryl on ink a la november22 you can decorate a whole building façade if you want to. Only because the majority of people here at Renderosity are hobbyist and dolldressers doesn't mean that good digital painters can't be found! With that said, most of us haven’t reached that level yet, and are thankful to learn from the real painters.

Wonderful Tom! You have found it! I've just picked myself up from laughing on the floor while reading vintorix's comments above. There's no way I can top them tonight or maybe tomorrow either:-) I find myself agreeing with him...particularly like his comments about people from Iowa!! ROTFL (Bill from Kansas)

Your finished work is impressive, Tom. Your colors are as much a part of the story as the subjects. It has been a pleasure to follow this, the others, and I hope future paintings. I retreated from painting for 50 years, because of my perfectionism. Digital got me back in to trying to create. I discovered that the most important thing for me was to express myself in whatever way I could, so I went in the direction of abstraction. 2D Forum has brought me full circle. It has inspired me to try to begin again. For 4 years, I proclaimed I could not draw. I just began drawing and have surprised myself. The key was that I relaxed and put my perfectionism away. The irony is that I love approaching detail more now. At this point in my life, being picky will only defeat me. I do what I can and enjoy it. I am competing with no one, not even myself. That doesn't mean I don't try to do the best I can, because I do. Now, I am doing better than anytime in my life and enjoying it. I don't kid myself, I just do it, and I love creating and expressing myself. Thank you for sharing your art, process and yourself. It is wonderful to go beyond the norm. You inspire me, too.

"If God Is For Us, Who Will Stand Against Us? The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by Him: and the Lord shall cover him all the day long." Deut. 33:12 KJV Beautiful painting, Tom, and excellent work.

I think I'm the most illiterate person here regarding painting. But I'm good in pencil drawing.Any way one day I too will take brush and paint, its so fascinating and I know its inside me, strugling to break out. You are right, even an ignorant person like me can pick up a work by Vincent Van Gough from among a 1000 paintings, instantly. There is no exaggeration in it.

This is wonderful! I think you might be done, despite the fact that you are "still looking for this painting". Everhyting has sharpened up, the stones in the foreground are sharp, the trees looking marvelous, the sky stormy. The figures seem to be frozen in time .. ready to move any second .. colors are wonderful. Each stage has been beautiful in it's own right, could have been framed as it was. Just my humble opinion.

wonderful detailed work! love the color tones and you did well! ;o)
