Description
Lately most of my stuff has turned out to put it mildly, kinda crappy (not the stuff in my gallery, cough cough) so I thought I'd give myself a basic exercise that I could at least learn something from while waiting for some creative insperation.
So here is my exercise. 6 spheres (3 are off camera) on a flat plane. I'm still working on the pool ball surface (getting those tiny scratches are tougher than I thought). Big scratches are easy but the tiny ones are tougher. Same with the felt. Still trying to figure out how to smooth it out and add the dust and stray micro debris you find on most pool tables. Distance shots are easy but when you're this close it gets tougher.
Anyway...

Awesome work, the big view is a must. Love the little scratches in the ball, I think you did great. I have no real clue but seems like the balls might have some greesy finger print smudges too, just a thought. But love it just as it is, wondeful work.

Could you add a very small displacement procedural to the pool table top, perhaps as a gradient with distance to cam being the parameter ? just a thought....nice reflections by the way.

Ultra photorealistic, Lighting is superb. How long was the render on this image?

ephotosaver > Ultra photorealistic, Lighting is superb. How long was the render on this image? There were 3 main render times depending on the settings used. They are detailed below. For the fullsize version (3072 x 2304): 1st render - Base render was about 40 mins 2nd render - With depth of field added and soft / blurry turned in the 8 ball shader about 9 1/2 hours (this is the one used). There was no need to turn on soft relfections on the 2 other pool balls are blurred by the depth of field options. Global Illumination was set for ambient occlusion only. Improved edges enabled. 3rd render - Full Global illumination, indirect lighting, soft reflections on all pool balls, light quality set to high... After 27 hours it was only 58% complete but I could tell that it wasn't going to look as good as render number 2 (it was too bright and I didn't like te contrast) so I stopped the render.
