Description

Yesterday I posted an image of a rather large ant. I took that shot with my old Nikon 7900 pocket camera. As I mentioned in that posting, I have upgraded my camera to a Nikon D40X. Right now I am trying to learn how to use it and in keeping with that plan, I have been using my old camera as a baseline to compare the results with those from the new. As of now, the old is wining hands down, lol. Here is another view of yesterdays posting with a side be side view taken with the new D40x within secs of each other. The 7900 is on the left and the D40x is on the right. Shooting distances were almost identical. I was using a 10x close up filter with the 18-55mm Nikkor AF-VR lens set to the 55mm end and using the macro camera setting. I was using the built-in 7.8-23.4mm lens of the Nikon 7900 on the 7.8 end and using the macro camera setting. Your comments would be appreciated. Lee

I like the image on the right. To me, the color is better, I like the closer image. That said, the image on the left appears more crisp while the one on the right seems to have fuzzy edges...although I can see the tiny hairs. But hey, what do I know about cameras and photography : )

The new lens does bring out the colors in a very vibrant way but I see the focus is a bit different. It got a perfectly well focused head and the rest started to lose it. The depth of focus seems to be different with the new camera.

Great macro - jdehaven wrote on one of my last posts that the macro-shots doesn't have such a great range of sharpness in auto-mode, there is always a bigger DOF-Effect on the images. I by myself use the other programs of the cam more - you could try the A-Setting and use to set the aperture-size on a higher number (the 'blinds' open lesser and there is a smaller DOF-Effect) I hope you understand what I mean. Try to read in the manual about the custom settings - I got some good shots using the custom mode.

I think they have both come out well, though you will not get true 1/1 macro even with the 10 times closeup and a true Macro lens may be needed as the compacts macro mode may do a better job until you do.

I think they are both pretty nice, but I like the one on the right best. The colors are richer and you can see the hairs on the behind... not that I'm in to hairy behinds ;o) I think it is just a better overall image. :o)

I have to disagree with bpclarke on this Lee. Yes you can see the hairs on the backside of the image on the right but they are much clearer in the image on the left. I do agree with Danob though, I too have the same problems with quite a lot of my shots, the dof is very shallow and falls off quite drastically, leaving much of the image out of focus. Quite a few use the lens reversed for taking macro shots, mickuk50 has been doing quite well with this method, if you want to check out his gallery. All I can add to that is persever with it Lee, you will get better and better, your 7900 is still a brilliant little camera though and if it was mine I would still carry it around like you do. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!

I had the same problem with my new camera and gave my old one away and for awhile it was with some regret, but I'm finding as each day goes by as I go through my learning curve with the new camera that it is far more superior than my old one now I dont miss the old one at all. They are both very fine captures the ant on the right angle is a little different than the one on the left that make a big difference to your focus. I have had a look at both camera specs and the Nikon D40X is a great camera once you learn the inners and outers you will wonder what all the fuss was about. Good Luck.
