Description

The Point Reyes Lighthouse began operation in 1870 and was retired from service in 1975 when the Coast Guard installed an automated light. The first order Fresnel lens (the largest size) and mechanism for the lighthouse were constructed in France in 1867. The clockwork mechanism, glass prisms, and housing for the lighthouse were shipped on a steamer around the tip of South America to San Francisco. The lighthouse is located 300-ft. below the 600-ft. high headland to avoid the characteristic high fog. Point Reyes is the windiest place on the Pacific Coast and the second foggiest place on the North American continent. Picture was taken in December 2001 and later scanned.
