Description

Commenting Bourbon Country with Bill (bmac62), we spoke of the little known Tidewater War, usually called Whiskey Rebellion, and the issue of Big Government or Small Government. In Italy we are both crushed by Big Government and taxes. However, I recalled that I had at least a couple of photos on the subject. This one is the car plate of an angry US citizen. The USA are possibly the best hunting ground for opinionated plates and car stickers. This pic was made with my old Mavica. Here I made a summary of the Whiskey Rebellion. The Whiskey Rebellion or Insurrection, was a popular uprising that had its beginnings in 1793 and culminated in an insurrection in 1797 in the locality of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the Monongahela Valley. During George Washington's presidency, the government decided to tax whiskey in order to pay off the national debt. This infuriated the citizenry and led to the Whiskey Rebellion. George Washington and Alexander Hamilton decided to make Pennsylvania a testing ground for federal authority. Washington ordered federal marshals to serve court orders requiring the tax protesters to appear in federal district court. On August 7, 1794, Washington invoked martial law to summon the militias of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and several other states. The rebel force they fought was likewise composed of Pennsylvanians, Virginians, and possibly men from other states. The militia force of 12,950 men was organized, roughly the size of the entire army in the Revolutionary War. This marked the first time under the new United States Constitution that the federal government used military force to exert authority over the nation's citizens. It was also one of only two times that a sitting President personally commanded the military in the field; the other was after President James Madison fled the British occupation of Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812. The suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion also had the unintended consequences of encouraging small whiskey producers in Kentucky and Tennessee, which remained outside the sphere of Federal control for many more years. In these frontier areas, they also found good corn-growing country as well as limestone-filtered water and therefore began making whiskey from corn; this corn whiskey developed into Bourbon. Additionally, the rebellion and its suppression helped turn people away from the Federalist Party and toward the Democratic-Republican Party (later the Republicans). The farmers were very angry. The hated whiskey tax was repealed in 1803, having been largely unenforceable outside of Western Pennsylvania, and even there never having been collected with much success. The rebellion is referenced in A.F. Beddoe's song "Copper Kettle" (1953), which has been recorded by Joan Baez, and by Bob Dylan on his 1970 album Self Portrait. The song contains the line "We ain't paid no whiskey tax since 1792". The rebellion plays a central role in David Liss' novel, The Whiskey Rebels (2008), in which settlers and distillers seek revenge against Hamilton and the Bank of the United States. Neat photo...good humor. Thanks Sandra for thinking of me with this posting. We haven't been crushed by big government and taxes (in the USA), BUT all the signs are that is about to start changing. Imagine President Obama taking to the field on horseback commanding the army to get the taxes collected!!! Great rundown on the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Your rebel friend, Bill.

I agree with bmac62, things are starting to change in this country. Socialism added to a country that was based on freedom and democracy is a crushing blow to the citizens. It is unfortunate the second "Tea Party" we just experienced seemed to have no effect on the Washington Congress or Senate. Nancy Pelosi called it, "astro turf" as an insult, to the grass roots organized protest.

Very nice image, funny too:-) And great history~ Some stated have taxes much higher than others and as Bill said things are a changin' and it could only get worse in terms of taxation, in my opinion. If anyone has reason to be policed its the IRS!!! Yep a bit of a rebel here too:-)

A great image and superb descriptive of the whiskye rebellion! I am afraid for the future of the US with the trillions of dollars of debt Obama has saddled US with. As many have said, once the economy starts to recover, we will no doubt experience hyper inflation, perhaps the likes of Germany after WWI? Anyway, great going on this one! I love all the comments by others as well! 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000++++++++++++++++++ Inflation, don't you love it? NOT!

Great capture and humor Sandra. Very interesting history about the Whiskey Rebellion. All ideological differences aside, I thing the tax burden is becoming more and more the same everywhere.

That was a new to me "whisky rebellion". Thank you for sharing this. But I have a different opnion. I don't have any idea how important is whisky in your country, but after all its only a alcoholic drink, isn't it.Is it a necessity for life.May in the cold countries such drinks are important. Otherwise I don't see anything wrong on taxing alcoholes.

All so true and i loved reading ur story if only the butt heads in Washington would listen to the little people outside of their world maybe things could come together but they worry only about their selves and their pockets no matter what happens to us all i got to say is that if a war comes over here they will be hid away and us to defend for ourselves just bend over and kiss ur butt goodbye.

Ah interesting - good writeup and I was surprised by your linking the Whiskey Rebellion to the photo. Of course taxes are an interesting problem. One must remember to be careful what we ask our goverments to do for us. Afterall it has to be paid for and taxes are the source of that payment. It is a very complex issue.
